Which Books to read in Hanoi?

Tô Hoài (1920–2014)

Born Nguyễn Sen, Tô Hoài was a prolific writer known for his extensive literary output. His most celebrated work is Dế Mèn Phiêu Lưu Ký (Diary of a Cricket, 1941), a beloved children’s novel that has been translated into multiple languages and adapted into various art forms. The story follows the adventurous journey of a cricket, offering profound lessons on life and morality. 

Ma Văn Kháng (b. 1936)

Born Đinh Trọng Đoàn, Ma Văn Kháng is recognized for his contributions to Vietnamese literature during the Đổi Mới (Renovation) period. His works often explore the lives of ethnic minorities in northern Vietnam and urban experiences. Notable among his writings is Against the Flood, which delves into contemporary Hanoi’s societal changes. 

Ngô Tự Lập (b. 1962)

A versatile writer, poet, essayist, translator, and songwriter, Ngô Tự Lập has a diverse literary portfolio. Nguyễn Nhật Ánh (b. 1955)

Specializing in stories for teenagers, his novel I See Yellow Flowers on the Green Grass (2010) depicts the lives of children in rural Vietnam and has been adapted into a successful film.
